Gertrude Bell - the desert photographer
I have been reading more about Gertrude Bell and her photography - she was largely a self taught photographer and was a member of the Royal Photographic Society. 'She carried two cameras where ever she went. One was a hand camera that took glass plates 6.5 inches by 4.25 wide, the other designed for panoramic views.' (Daughter of the Desert, Georgina Howell)
Bell would have used a camera very similar to the one below - imagine lugging this around the desert!
